Kay, What a great newsletter. I see it's just starting off and you're doing a fantastic job. Keep it up!
(Y, Thank you, Kind Sir!! as I always say...I couldn't do this without you and all the other BEARS! It is OUR newsletter, so let's keep it going!
Kay)
To all,
I was in the band (trombone and bass horn) starting at West and on through HS. Band President in '73, chess club from 68' - '72? (still love to play), Neat and I were both in the Choir - me '72 & '73 (cause I wanted to be near my sweetie) and she was in it when they started the choir.
Neat and I are still married and it will be 30 years (ouch) in January. For those of you who don't know us, we took an extra week at Christmas break our Senior year and decided to get married. Been together through thick and thin (thick waistlines and thin paychecks) ever since.
We have 1 daughter Crystal Rhiann - 22 years old - who we adopted in '81. She has Down's Syndrome and had open heart surgery when she was 13 months old. She came through with flying colors.
I've been working at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dallas for the past 13 years and currently I'm the Assistant Director of Security and Hotel Assistant Manager. I love it there. Neat is a domestic engineer and for those of you out there who have the same job classification, you know making a home is probably the hardest job out there.
We've been living in Dallas for the past 10 - 11 years. Hate it! Too many people, too much traffic. Ah, to be back living in WS.
My mom is still living there in the house I grew up in on Donald St. We get to go and visit every now and then and it's like turning the clock back. Neat's Mom and Dad are in Lake Worth and also have some property on the Young and Jack County line, between Graham and Jacksboro. Now when we get to go out there, I'm in Heaven. Nothing but the cows, coyotes, and other assorted critters.
I need to close for now, but I'll be sending some more input later. I'm going to get Neat to jot some lines down, too. Till next time...
Earnest Pennington

That was great, and we will be waiting to hear
more from both of you!

Many people will walk in and out of your life.
But only true friends will leave footprints in
your heart.

To handle others, use your heart.

If he betrays you twice, it is your fault.

Average minds discuss events;
Small minds discuss people.

Hi Kay,
I've been reading some of the back issues of the Bear Facts, (BIG THANKS for sending them) and having a great time remembering some of the stuff that I had forgotten. Just wanted to drop a few lines to some of the Bears out there.
(you are very welcome!)
To Karen Tomlinson:
The band that Dean Morrow played in was "The Bluegrass Boys" (or something like that). I graduated with Dean and knew him quite well. Some of the other guys in the group were George Giddens on fiddle, Ted Zarate on guitar, Steve Anthony on bass fiddle, and I can't remember anybody else (sorry!) They were good, ...very good! I remember them winning a battle of the bands competition and the band that was runner up to them came to Brewer and put on a show with "our" Bluegrass Boys. What a show!! They played Dixieland jazz and between the 2 of them it was, simply put... a fantastic show.
During one of the breaks, George Giddens and one of the members from the other band came out and did a CLASSICAL duet. Just great!!!!
On the subject of the "odd shaped annuals"...I've got to be honest. The day they started handing those out to us...our Senior year...I was extremely upset. Don't get me wrong..the material inside was great.. but you really needed it to fit in your locker. Later on it would have been nice if it had fit in my bookcase!! I never took the opportunity to gripe at someone who was on that years annual staff but, I'm sure ya'll took some heat for it. Enough of my belly aching!!! LOL
To Kim:
Man, do I remember Ms. Roberts and I agree, she was one of the best teachers I ever had. I remember one day in class we were scheduled to start studying evolution. She brought a Bible to class and set it down right next to the class book. The way she presented the differences between the 2 philosophies just about set everybody off. She really challenged our belief system and got the entire class involved and thinking. What a great teacher!!
To Roxane:
I've really enjoyed your "inputs". Some of the stuff made me laugh so hard, I almost came to tears. KEEP IT UP!!!
The last thing I wanted to share was something I just remembered today.
Going back in time now....1972...Ms. Moore's 5th period algebra class...what a hot day, muggy, I'm sweating..(no A/C back in the OLD days)... for the life of me, to this day, I still don't know why I was in algebra..hated it, didn't get it, didn't like the teacher... I'm sitting sideways in my desk...not paying attention in class (as usual)...waiting for the bell to ring, time passing by so slow...looking out the window...the runway at Carswell AFB in plain sight...watching an older, prop job plane, cargo plane I think...slowly approaching for a landing..... closer, closer, just a few more feet to go...suddenly the nose of the plane dips down and strikes the runway...a ball of flame erupts and engulfs the plane...black smoke pours into the sky. I don't remember the exact words out of my mouth but it draws everyone's attention to the horrifying sight on the runway. Class was over after that...nobody really knew what to say...we were helpless. The same feeling came over me some years later while sitting in my living room one day watching CNN. A plane had reportedly struck one of the World Trade Center towers. Watching the event unfold before my eyes, when suddenly another plane comes out of the right of the TV screen and strikes the second
tower. Horrified, helpless, angry...I hope and pray that it is the last time
I have to witness such a sight.
I have to close now but, my prayers go out to all those who have lost loved ones. Until next time...

*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*
Earnest---What you wrote about the plane crash at Carswell and the World Trade Center really struck a chord with me. We have seen so many things in our lifetime, haven't we? I didn't see the Carwell crash (my sister Pam did and she too was traumatized and horrified) but I distinctly remember watching the Challenger space shuttle disaster on television with my son Matt, who was a toddler at the time. We turned the TV on just in time to see the Challenger explode, and I remember Matt turning to me and asking "What's that Mama? Where's the space shuttle? Where did it go?" I was in complete shock and at a total loss for words as to how to explain this horror to my young son. I felt that very same feeling as I watched the planes crash into the World Trade Center. As the towers crumbled, all I could think was "People are dying in front of my eyes and there isn't a damn (pardon the language) thing I can do about it." I also knew that because I work with people who deal with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder everyday that the entire country would probably be dealing with the hellish after effects of PTSD after watching the trauma of the WTC. As I said, its amazing how much our generation has seen in our lifetime. I truly think these catastrophes have made most of us much more grateful for the lives we have and the wonderful country we live in. Just a foot note: I just returned from vacation, traveling to Miami, Florida and the Bahamas. Once again, I realized (as I do everytime I leave home) that there really is no place like Texas. The people, the lifestyle, everything, I wouldn't live anywhere else in the world. (no offense to anyone out there living in another state) Texas is just Texas--that's all there is need to say. See everyone at the reunion--Kim Sealy Baumer '75
*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*
I remember that sad day the plane crashed on the runway at Carswell. Since the windows were opened, some kids in the (I think) Senior photography class saw it and grabbed camers and started taking pictures. Someone saw something going down the runway and it was first thought it was a person but it was a tire. The photos were displayed in the halls downstairs for a while if I remember right.

Soda Springs BBQ menu:
Sliced Brisket, Smoked Sausage and sliced Turkey, pinto beans, potato salad, I believe bread and apple cobbler for dessert. That may change because I'm not sure on the Sausage. But that is a start. There will be Tea and water and we'll have a coffee pot brought by one of us and Soda Springs will man it for us.

Vicki Wilson (Wilson) class contact for '74 was in the hospital last week due to problems with diabetes. She is home now and doing much better. Hope she will be well enough in time to make it to the reunion, as she has been really looking forward to it and to seeing everyone. Please keep her in your prayers.

an up-date on Tom Jordan, husband of Jo Hardman (Jordan) '74.
To All:
Thank you so much for your prayers and notes of encouragement for Tom and his family.
Miraculously, he has recovered from the initial surgery such that he was able to attend our family reunion last weekend. It had been scheduled prior to his health challenge and we had no expectation that he would actually be able to attend, but......Our God is so wonderful!
Last week Tom and family traveled to Houston's MD Anderson Cancer Clinic, (about 300 miles south) which is one of the premier facilities in the world. Following extensive diagnostics, the Neurosurgeon reported that he should be able to remove the majority of the mass and had higher expectation for Tom's eventual recovery than what had been the original surgeon's impression.
Tom has another appointment in Houston tomorrow morning at 10 am. Last week's appointment led them to believe that surgery would probably be performed soon after tomorrow's appointment, possibly Wednesday or Thursday.
As they prepared to leave, a call was received from the nurse who works for the neurosurgeon. She said the earliest surgical date would be the 10th. Tom is having some symptoms and he and the family are eager to move forward with treatment. Prayerfully, we'll leave it in God's hands as HE knows what is best at this time.
We have seen God orchestrate an operating room on a Sunday for the original surgery; extraordinary surgery recovery with no loss of essential faculties. Miracle after miracle after miracle. Please keep the Jordan's in your prayers.
Ken Edwards
America,
Bless God.

REUNION TIME
Every ten years, as summertime nears,
An announcement arrives in the mail,
"A reunion is planned; it'll be really grand;
Make plans to attend without fail."
I'll never forget the first time we met;
We tried so hard to impress.
We drove fancy cars, smoked big cigars,
And wore our most elegant dress.
It was quite an affair; the whole class was there.
It was held at a fancy hotel.
We wined and we dined and we acted refined,
And everyone thought it was swell.
The men all conversed about who had been first
To achieve great fortune and fame.
Meanwhile, their spouses described their fine houses
And how beautiful their children became.
The homecoming queen, who once had been lean,
Now weighed in at one-ninety-six.
The jocks who were there had all lost their hair,
And the cheerleaders could no more do kicks.
No one had heard about the class nerd
Who'd guided a spacecraft to the moon;
Or poor little Jane, who'd always been plain;
She married a shipping tycoon.
The boy we'd decreed "most apt to succeed"
Was serving ten years in the pen,
While the one voted "least" now was a priest;
Shows you can be wrong now and then.
They awarded a prize to one of the guys
Who seemed to have aged the least.
Another was given to the grad who had driven
The farthest to attend the feast.
They took a class picture, a curious mixture
Of beehives, crew cuts and wide ties.
Tall, short or skinny, the style was the mini;
You never saw so many thighs.
At our next get-together, no one cared whether
They impressed their classmates or not.
The mood was informal, a whole lot more normal;
By this time we'd all gone to pot.
It was held out-of-doors, at the lake shores;
We ate hamburgers, coleslaw and beans.
Then most of us lay around in the shade,
In our comfortable T-shirts and jeans.
By the fortieth year, it was abundantly clear,
We were definitely over the hill.
Those who weren't dead had to crawl out of bed,
And be home in time for their pill.
And now I can't wait; they've just set the date;
Our fiftieth is coming, I'm told.
It should be a ball, they've rented a hall
At the Shady Rest Home for the old.
Repairs have been made on my hearing aid;
My pacemaker's been turned up on high.
My wheelchair is oiled, my teeth have been boiled;
And I've bought a new wig and glass eye.
I'm feeling quite hearty, I'm ready to party;
I'll dance 'til the dawn's early light.
It'll be lots of fun; I just hope there's one
Other person who gets there that night.

The Bear Tracks 60s float got 5th place in the WS Days parade according to The Bomber News. If you didn't get to see it you really missed something. A lot of hard work and a lot of hours went into building the float. (and I'm sure, a lot of fun) It really was the best float and I think it should have gotten 1st place all the way! Of course I'm not showing any favoritism!! haha......you bet I am! WAY TO GO BTs 60s! GREAT JOB!

40+ yr. old woman getting ready for the class reunion.....
I had prepared for it like any intelligent woman would. I went on a
starvation diet the day before, knowing that all the extra weight would just melt off in 24-hours, leaving me with my sleek, trim, high-school-girl body.
The last many years of careful cellulite collection would just be gone with
a snap of a finger. I knew if I didn't eat a morsel on Friday, that I could
probably fit into my senior formal on Saturday.
Trotting up to the attic, I pulled the gown out of the garment bag, carried
it lovingly downstairs, ran my hand over the fabric, and hung it on the
door. I stripped naked, looked in the mirror, sighed, and thought, "Well,
okay, maybe if I shift it all to the back..." bodies never have pockets
where you need them. Bravely, I took the gown off the hanger, unzipped the shimmering dress and stepped gingerly into it. I struggled, twisted, turned, and pulled and I got the formal all the way up to my knees
...before the zipper gave out. I was disappointed. I wanted to wear that dress with those silver platform sandals again and dance the night away.
Okay, one setback was not going to spoil my mood for this affair. No way!
Rolling the dress into a ball and tossing it into the corner, I turned to
Plan B: the black velvet caftan. So I gathered up all the goodies that I had purchased at the drug store: the scented shower gel; the body building and highlighting shampoo, and conditioner, and the split-end killer, and shine enhancer. Soon my hair would look like that girl's in the Pantene ads. Then the makeup -- the under eye "ain't no lines here" firming cream, the all-day face-lifting gravity-fighting moisturizer with wrinkle filler spackle; the all day "kiss me 'til my lips bleed, and see if this gloss will come off" lipstick, the bronzing face powder for that special glow... But first, theroll-on facial hair remover. I could feel the wrinkles shuddering in fear.
OK - time to get ready...I jumped into the steaming shower, soaped,
lathered, rinsed, shaved, tweezed, buffed, scrubbed, and scoured my body to a tingling pink. I plastered my freshly-scrubbed face with the anti-wrinkle, gravity fighting, "your face will look like a baby's butt" face cream. I set my hair on the hot rollers. I felt wonderful. Ready to take on the world. Or in this instance, my underwear. With the towel firmly wrapped around my glistening body, I pulled out the black lace, tummy-tucking, cellulite-pushing, ham hock-rounding girdle, and the matching "lifting those bosoms like they're filled with helium" bra. I greased my body with the scented body lotion and began the plunge. I pulled, stretched, tugged, hiked, folded, tucked, twisted, shimmied, hopped, pushed, wiggled, snapped, shook, caterpillar crawled, and kicked.
Sweat poured off my forehead but I was done. And it didn't look bad. So I rested. A well deserved rest, too. The girdle was on my body. Bounce a quarter off my behind? It was tighter than a trampoline. Can you say, "Rubber baby buggy bumper butt?" Okay, so I had to take baby steps, and walk sideways, and I couldn't move from my butt
cheeks to my knees. But, I was firm!
Oh no...I had to go to the bathroom. And there wasn't a snap crotch. From now on, undies gotta have a snap crotch. I was ready to rip it open and re-stitch the crotch with Velcro, but the pain factor from past experiments was still fresh in my mind. I quickly side stepped to the bathroom. An hour later, I had answered nature's call and repeated the struggle into the girdle.
I was ready for the bra and remembered what the saleslady said to do. I
could see her glossed lips mouthing, "Do not fasten the bra in the front,
and twist it around. Put the bra on the way it should be worn--straps over the shoulders. Then bend over and gently place both breasts inside the cups." Easy if you have four hands. But, with confidence, I put my arms into the holsters, bent over and pulled the bra down...but the boobs weren't cooperating. I'd no sooner tuck one in a cup, and while placing the other, the first would slip out. I needed a strategy. I bounced up and down a few times, tried to dribble them in with short bunny hops, but that didn't work.
So, while bent over, I began rocking gently back and forth on my heel and toes and I set 'em to swinging. Finally, on the fourth swing, pause, and lift, I captured the gliding glands. Quickly fastening the back of the bra, I stood up for examination. Back straight, slightly arched, I turned and faced the mirror, turning front, and then sideways. I smiled, "Yes, Houston, we have lift up!" My breasts were high, firm and there was cleavage! I was happy until I tried to look down. I had a chin rest and I couldn't see my feet.
I still had to put on my pantyhose, and shoes. Oh...why did I buy heels with buckles? Then I had to pee again. I put on my sweats, fixed myself a drink, ordered pizza, and skipped the reunion.
