Welcome, to Bear Facts 70's

This was forwarded to me by a 60s decade Bear regarding Betsy Pennington '63:
We have taken a completely different approach to the stroke symptoms... ...very hopeful about this!!! The white energy is working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Today, the aneurysm surgery date will be set, then Betsy will be leaving hospital for a few days to consult with this other person.
Will fill you in as soon as I know more.
That white energy is working!!! Keep it up...10 pm...

mk (Mary Kay Pennington '66)

The "white energy" mentioned is from Bear Tracks 60s, where every night at 10pm we close our eyes and send positive white energy to those that need our prayers, hope, & love. It has worked before and seems to be working it's magic again. There's
strength in numbers and BEARS are the strongest!
So for all of our Bears that are in need, please,
don't forget 10pm every night!

Subject: As it was.........

Looking back, it's hard to believe that we have lived as long as we have.
As children we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
Our baby cribs were painted with bright colored lead based paint. We
often chewed on the crib, ingesting the paint.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors, or cabinets, and when we rode our bikes we had no helmets.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then rode down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on. No one was able to reach us all day.
We played dodgeball and sometimes the ball would really hurt.
We ate cupcakes, bread and butter, and drank sugar soda, but we were never overweight; we were always outside playing.
Little League had tryouts, and not everyone made the team. Those
who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Some students weren't as smart as others or didn't work hard so they failed a grade and were held back to repeat the same grade. That generation produced some of the greatest risk-takers and problem solvers.
We had the freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

Looking forward to seeing class of '71. Hope someone brings the yearbook - not to compare how well we've all aged but so we can remember who's who. I had one (a yearbook) but can't seem to locate it.

Kay--Now how on earth did you know what all of us 40+ women go through when we're getting ready to see people we haven't seen in almost 30 years? Were you standing in my bathroom watching me get ready? LOL I loved that one!! Wouldn't it be great if we all came to the reunion and didn't give a second thought to the way we looked? Just happy to be there, happy to see everyone, and happy to be alive? Probably, there is a whole bunch of us that feel that way!
I just wanted to send a big "Thank You" to the class of '75. The response to the reunion has been phenomenal and I am so looking forward to seeing everyone! Back in school, we were often called the "dead" class, (I guess for our lack of enthusiasm, I'm not really sure) but we sure showed them this time!! Go '75 Bears!!
To ALL the classes of the 70's--great responses and I'll see you there!! Kim Sealy Baumer '75
*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*
HaHa! I have my ways!
I figured many of us were going thru the same thing!
I, for one, will be one of the ones just happy to be there and to have a great time! Hope most others feel that way. You are right the responses have been great. See you very soon!

THOSE WERE THE DAYS , MY FRIENDS
words taken from song by Mary Hopkins - 1969
" Those Were The Days , My Friend "
ONCE UPON A TIME AT BREWER HIGH SCHOOL,
WHERE WE WENT IN OUR YOUNGER DAYS.
REMEMBER HOW WE LAUGHED AWAY SOME HOURS
AND DREAMED OF ALL THE GREAT THINGS WE WOULD DO.
THOSE WERE THE DAYS , MY FRIENDS!
WE THOUGHT THEY'D NEVER END .
WE'D SING OR CHEER AT PEP-RALLIES FOREVER AND A DAY.
WE'D GO TO THE FOOTBALL GAMES WE CHOOSE ,
WE'D FIGHT AND THOUGHT WE SHOULD NEVER LOSE -
THOSE WERE THE DAYS , MY FRIENDS.
FOR WE WERE YOUNG AND SURE TO HAVE OUR WAY.
THEN THE BUSY YEARS WENT RUSHING BY US.
SOMETIMES WE FORGOT OUR B.H.S SPIRIT ALONG THE WAY.
BUT IF BY CHANCE I SEE YOU
AT THE 70'S DECADE REUNION ,
WE'LL SMILE AT ONE ANOTHER AND REMEMBER .
AND THEN WE'LL SAY,
THOSE WERE SOME REALLY GOOD OLD DAYS, MY FRIEND!
JUST TONIGHT I STOOD BEFORE THE HIGH SCHOOL
ENTRANCE, NOTHING SEEMED THE WAY IT USED TO BE .
IN THE GLASS I SAW A STRANGE REFLECTION -
WAS THAT OLDER PERSON REALLY ME ??
THROUGH THE DOORS THERE CAME FAMILIAR LAUGHTER!
I SAW YOUR FACE AND HEARD YOU CALL MY NAME.
OH MY FRIENDS WE 'RE OLDER AND WISER,
FOR IN OUR HEARTS THE MEMORIES WILL REMAIN THE SAME .
WE' LL ALWAYS CHERISH BREWER HIGH SCHOOL,
BECAUSE THOSE WERE THE BEST
TIMES OF OUR YOUNGER DAYS , MY FRIENDS.

Thanks, Jann! All so true, my Friends!!

To All:
Fifteen members of the 1952 First Football Team and four of the original cheerleaders have said that they will be at the game on Friday. They will be honored during the pre-game activities. The first football sweetheart will also be presented. She will be escorted by her nephew, Frank Molinar(class of 1985), who is also principal of Liberty Elementary in W.S. Drill team and band alumni who want to participate need to call BHS and let Kelly Winn or Sandra McCormick know of your intentions.

Pre-game activities will begin at approximately 6:50 p.m. We are expecting a big turnout so you might want to be here early for parking and seating. Due to fire codes and other restrictions, we will not be able to add additional bleachers for the game. You might want to buy reserved seat tickets. Call Sue Pannell Hammonds, class of 1966, in the Athletic Office for more information. Sue is the secretary to the Athletic Director and will be happy to help you. 817-367-1200, ext 276.

Be sure to notice the field, special 50th design, just for homecoming. Also, don't forget to buy a 'ribbon' and a program for a keepsake.

Be sure and stay for the Dedication of the Dorothy Morris Center after the game. Following the dedication, there will be a social in the cafeteria and commons area of BHS for all exes, family and friends. The homemaking classes of Brewer High will provide cookies, punch and coffee.

Also in the works is "Bear Alley", an area for little cubs to go to prior to the game for games, booths, face painting, etc.

Don't forget Thursday night---Exes Association Business meeting, Choir Concert and Pep Rally.

Lots of plans! Come on out, visit old friends, enjoy the all of the activities of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Brewer High School and cheer the Bears on to victory!

Kay,

You're the greatest!! I really appreciate all your help and I'm really looking forward to seeing the pixs in the newsletter following the reunion. Dang, I really hate the fact that I won't be able to make it this year. Major League Bummer!! I would love to have seen who all turns up and how they're doin'!! I'm sure there are gonna be some great faces and stories that I'm gonna miss. Unfortunately, I didn't get to graduate from Brewer with the rest of yahs. Left there in eighth grade, returned for the beginning of my senior year and then had to leave again, just when I was gettin' to know everyone all over again. That sucked!! Afraid Dad was in the Air Force and whelp, when Uncle Sam says you gotta go, you gotta go! Some of my fondest memories are White Settlement/Fort Worth, Texas, and the folks I met while growing up there. Have a great time at the reunion and please tell everyone that Norm Bolen says, "Hey, and he sends his love!!" Really hate that I'm gonna miss y'all!! Thanks again, Kay!! Maybe next time...

Best of luck and luv yah back,
Norm Bolen '73

luv ya 2, K

To All:
OH WOW! What a wonderful weekend it was! If you weren't there you really missed a great time.

My weekend started off with me missing the school tour and pep rally on Fri. morning, since I didn't get to bed till 5am. So I just packed my things and headed for Haltom City where I stayed at Vicki Wilson's '74 house. Several of us met for lunch at Golden Corral on Fri. Those in attendence were: Me, Barbie Jaynes Brewer '79, Audrey Schauer Crist '77, Roxane Rogers Enos '73, Vicki Wilson Wilson '74, Charla Cecil Crothers '73, & Dawnelle Holden Walker '73.

After lunch Vicki & I went back to her house where it continued to rain so I decided to skip the Homecoming game. (which we WON!) Sure didn't want to get sick before Sat. Then I was so nervous & excited about Sat. I couldn't get to sleep. Last time I looked at the clock it was 4:15am!

Sat. I got up at 7am and left about 9 for WS. to meet an old friend and we spent the day just touring WS and enjoying the memories. Went to get Vicki and then on to the reunion. We had to be there at 5 to decorate. That done, people started to arrive and then it was packed with classmates from every year of the 70s. '73 still had the most in attendence, but not sure yet on exact total. There were a lot of ppl that said they would be there and didn't show, but that's ok, we still had a good turn-out. I hope to have a list of names from each class before the next issue comes out. (Barrrbieee? I need help here!) It was so good to see old friends. It was all very exciting and I had one of the best times ever! There were several ppl that I missed getting to see and really wanted to see and I sure hated that. All the memorabillia posters, uniforms, year books, music, food, etc. was great! Best of all was the friendships that were re-newed and the new ones made.

After the reunion, several of us joined others at the Sokol Club for the exes dance. There was a lot of the 70s gang there, too. It was a blast!
I won't be missing that yearly dance ever again. I sure didn't get much sleep that night either.

Sun. Vicki & I went to the Silver Wheel Skating Rink for the 50th Anniversary of the rink, in memory of Lenard & Ruby Pemberton. It was cool seeing old pix, ads, tokens etc. from the rink. Bob Pemberton was there with his wife, Debbie. Ed & Erma Stites and their family was all there. A lot of ppl from the 60s showed up, but alas the 70s were lacking a bit that time. There was only 6 of us there: me, Sharon Sanders (Reyes) '73, Vicki Wilson (Wilson) '74, Bob Pemberton '72, Phillip VanZant '71, & Ricky Mitchell '72. It was still fun even though I didn't skate. My sons, Merick & Dyllon sure did though. They had a really good time, although Dyllon got a few bruises from falling down so much!

We left the rink and went back to Vicki's to get my stuff and then I headed for home. Darn.......the weekend just wasn't long enough for me, esp. Sat. night! Can't wait till our 30th next year and the exes dance!

Several ppl want to have get-togethers every month or two, so if any of you want to set one up at a club or something, let me know and I will post it on the newsletter. That way some ppl that can't make it to one, can maybe make to the next.

Anyone that took pix at the reunion please send them here to Bear Facts 70s@aol.com so I can post them on it. You can scan them and send them here or mail them to me to scan & I promise to take of them & mail them back to you after I scan them.
mailing addy: PO Box 42 Poolville TX 76487

I want to thank everyone that worked so hard to make this reunion a success. THANK YOU, ALL! A special Thanks goes to my boys, Merick & Marshall, that did the music & took pix for me. Thanks, Guys!
Here's a very special Thanks to the 2 that stayed and helped me carry stuff out to my truck. (you know who you are!) THANK YOU!
And a final thanks to all those BEARS that came to the reunion as it sure wouldn't have been one without you! So......
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH,
EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!!!!!!

BHS BEARS are the greatest!!! luv yah all!!!!!

Welcome,to Bear Facts 70's

From Earnest Pennington, '73
Kay,
I'm so sorry we missed the reunion. We were really looking forward to it. I was able to get my vacation time, but alas, I ended up getting sick and wasn't able to do much of anything till the following week. It really sucks when you get sick on vacation. We did get to go visit Neat's family on Tuesday and then we went out to Jacksboro on Wednesday. We came back through White Settlement and visited my Mom and brother for a while, so it wasn't a complete loss. While at my Mom's we asked them if they had heard anything about Brewer's anniversary festivities and Mom said they had just got the latest edition of the Bomber News and it was all in there. I at least got a kick out of seeing some of the pictures and reading some familiar names. It appears we really missed a good time. Anyway, I was telling them about talking to you and asked Mom if she remembered your folks and before she could answer, my brother asked if you had a brother named Gary. I told him that's the one and he said he remembered him. By the way my brother's name is Mike Hawkins (half brother), class of '64, so you might want to ask Gary if he remembers him. Mom remembered your Mom and Mike said he remembered your Dad and his store. We had a real good time talking about some of the
old days.
It's funny how no matter how much White Settlement changes, some of the people have been there, in the same houses, for years. Mom and Dad moved into the house on Donald in 1950! My grandparents lived right down the street and moved there in 1947. My aunt and uncle still live right across the street. The house my grandparents lived in now belongs to my cousin, Rick Rutledge, '74. Mike was telling me that just a while back he saw Mr. Barnes, Erma and Fayes' dad, walking down the street. They still live in the house with that stone fence around the yard. Growing up I remembered thinking that fence was so cool! When Neat was reading the Bomber News she noticed the article covering the game was written by Ted Aldred. Mike said he was doing all the Bear games and that he believed Ted was living over on Lockwood. I remember Ted very well from those band days.I was wondering if you remember the Lowery twins. Greg, I believe, married Debra Stockton. Back in the early eighties when we were still living in WS we were attending Tower Baptist and Greg and Debra were also members. I think they were also living on Lockwood at the time. Just wondering if you ever hear anything from them.
It was good to read Norman Bolen's input in the last Bear Facts. I remember Norman very well also. I remember he and Arthur Brown were real good friends back then, next door neighbors I think. I remembered going to a birthday party for Norman but I can't remember the year, '69 or '70 maybe. One of the things I remembered most about Norman was that he was an exceptional artist. Man, was I ever jealous. Once I traced a picture of Spider-Man from one of my comic books and took it to school the next day. Norman pegged me from the get go. Of course I denied any wrong doing but Norman didn't let me get away with it. Norman, if you read this, sorry about that but I was just so damn
jealous of your talent. I still can't draw anything more than stick figures! It was really good to hear from you.
Also wondering if you ever hear anything from Sam Rupe. I ran into his dad back in the early eighties and he said Sam was a captain in the Air Force working on a law degree or something like that. Sam and I had some really good chess matches back in school. It would be good to hear what's going on with him.
To everybody out there, get your fingers typing. Kay can't do this all by herself. I noticed that the last couple of newsletters were written almost
entirely by her. I know there are a lot of ya'll that are enjoying her input, just like me, but I, for one, would like to here from ya'll too.
I guess I've rambled on long enough. Hope I didn't bore you to much with the reminiscing but I just got to thinking about the "old days" and had to e-mail you. Bye for now.
*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*
Wow that was great! Sounds like you guys had a lot of fun after all. I will be sure and ask Gary about Mike. Tell Mike he needs to email Bear Tracks 60s and get signed up with them. If he doesn't have a PC you can do that for him.
And it is Glen & Debra that are married, but everyone always confuses the Lowry twins! They are still married and I did talk to Debra. Didn't get in touch with Greg though. Didn't have info on Sam but sent a note with his sister's letter. Heard nadda back. As for Norman (Norm), he lives out of state so, we email each other almost daily. He makes me laugh from the minute I open an email from him. (Ok, Norm, we need some more input from you!!) Arthur was at the reunion and it was really good to see him. There were so many there and it was so wonderful that we had such a great turn-out. Wish there had been more time to spend visiting with everyone.

Hi,Kay!
Sorry you are sick! Earnest and I would have been at the reunion except for his blood pressure. 204/130 He was goofier than usual Ha! Doc and I feared a stroke if we had not taken fast action. God blessed however,(as per usual) and he was able to go with me to see our folks on Tues. He was so happy to get out of the apt. He didn't miss any work and that is always better than the alternative. Please, Bears, let us know of any get togethers as we are starving for some cave contact since we started planning for our Big Bear '70s reunion! We wouldn't have missed it for the world, but then again E and Crystal are my world, so you see my point.
From the cave wall here in the big, lonely city of Dallas, all our love and Bears Forever!
Anita Garth (Pennington) '73
*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*
Yeah I'm sick with some kind of type of bug. I've been in bed for the last 2 days and should be there now but this seemed more important.
Thanks, Neat! Sure hate it that ya'll missed the reunion but glad all is ok now. Thank God! Earnest you better take care of yourself!
We'll keep you posted on any up-coming get togethers. Several ppl asked about you two and I told them something major must have come up cause I knew you were really looking forward to being there.
*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*~^~*
If any of you want back issues of the newsletter please let me know ASAP. I have a list of new members that need them and I will add your name to that list so I won't have to send so many emails.
